Why is Restoration Needed?
Benefits of Large Wood
High levels of wood are natural and healthy for rivers, but the Quillayute River is missing essential habitat after 100 years of development in the floodplains, stream clearing for navigation, and historic logging practices. Historic removal of large wood in the 1900s for navigation resulted in less salmon and increased erosion.
Large wood as well as natural and engineered log jams create essential habitat for salmon by providing cover from predators, shade, and deep pools and in-river nutrients.
